Project Description

Eilean Donan Castle Roofing Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT

We were very privileged to be asked to get involved in this project by Lachlan Stewart of Anta Architecture, who was acting on behalf of The Conchra Charitiable Trust.  This was a challenging contract for which we were principle contractor responsible for Leadworks, Drainage, Scaffolding, Joinery, Stonemasonry and Slating.

2011-2012 Works

The works consisted of a redesign of the existing flat roof sections above the 2nd floor hallway, kitchen and scullery.  This included a strip our of existing wallheads and renewal of large areas of flat lead roofing.  We also constructed a new area of pitched roof and re-slated to match existing large stone slate.

The works were carried out during a winter close-down period for the castle between November 2011 and March 2012.  One of our main challenges during this period was dealing with the extreme weather conditions, which were some of the worst we had experienced, but we overcame these to complete the works on time and within budget.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank David Win (Castle-keeper) and his staff for their support and help during the works.  A difficult job such as this requires a lot of planning and we are grateful to our tam consisting of the following people …
Irene MacDonald Associates – Health & Safety
Ewen Mann – Client Surveyor – Torrance Partnership
Mark Fraser – Joiner
Stevie Strang – McDonald Scaffolding
John MacLean – Stone Masons

A special thank you goes to Lachie for issuing us with a real challenge and his expertise in seeing the contract through to completion.  This type of contract is exactly the kind of work we are able to carry our, with the building being a Category A listed Castle of National & Interational importance. We like to think we have provided a valuable service to this building the The Conchra Charitable Trust.  We were extremely grateful for the opportunity to work on such a prestigious building.
